Mechancial Engineering Seminar (ME 390)

Corporate representatives are invited to make a 40- to 50-minute presentation on engineering opportunities and challenges in their business area in Mechanical Engineering Seminar. This required course is taken by juniors in mechanical engineering each spring semester. Most begin interviewing with prospective employers the following year.

The main objectives of the course are:

  • to acquaint students with a variety of engineering activities and opportunities in industry;
  • to present information on new processes, products and engineering techniques currently used in industry;
  • to broaden students' views on the engineer's responsibilities to the community, the profession and society.

The course provides corporate representatives with a unique opportunity to share an industry-wide perspective on the ethics and practices of mechanical engineering. Participating companies have included 3M, Accenture, Ford Motor Company, General Electric, Intel, Kimberly-Clark and San Diego Gas and Electric.

Student response to these presentations has been very enthusiastic. Both industry participants and MechSE faculty believe the seminars provide a mutually beneficial opportunity for company representatives to meet and interact with some of the most promising future engineers in the country.
