Fellowship Opportunities - 2007/2008

American Association of University Women (AAUW)

  • International Fellowships are awarded for full-time study or research at accredited institutions to women who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents.  Applicants must have earned the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree by September 1, 2007, and must have applied to their proposed institution of study by the time of application (no later than December 1, 2007).  Selection criteria include outstanding academic record, professional potential, and the potential of the field of study to improve lives of women and girls in the country of origin. 
  • Award:  $18,000 for MS; $20,000 for PhD

  • Selected Professions Fellowships are awarded to women who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents and who intend to pursue a full-time course of study during the fellowship year in designated degree programs where women’s participation traditionally has been low.  Women doctoral candidates in engineering programs are eligible to apply if entering your final year of study.

Department of Defense (DOD)

  • National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowships – applicants must be citizens or nationals of the U.S. (Permanent residents cannot apply) and must receive their B.S. degree by Fall 2008.  Fellowships are only tenable at U.S. institutions.  To be eligible to apply for this fellowship, you must either be in your final year of undergraduate study or have completed no more than the equivalent of one academic year of full time graduate study as a part-time or full-time student.
  • Award:  $30,500-year 1, $31,000-year 2, $31,500-year 3

Department of Energy (DOE)

  • Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (CSGF) -  a program funded by the Department of Energy which works to identify and provide support for some of the very best computational science graduate students in the nation.  Applicants must be planning full-time PhD study at a U.S. university.  Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent resident aliens.  Applications available in October.
  • Award:  $31,200/year/4 yrs.

Ford Foundation

  • Pre-doctoral Fellowships for Minorities – applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and a member of one of the following groups:  Alaskan Natives (Eskimo or Aleut), Black/African Americans, Mexican Americans/Chacanas/Chicanos, Native American Indians, Native Pacific Islanders (Polynesian/Micronesian), or Puerto Ricans.  They must be enrolled in, or planning to enroll in, a research-based PhD program and aspiring to a teaching and research career.
  • Award:  $20,000/year for 3 years (must be used within a 5 year period)

Hertz Foundation

  • Graduate Fellowship Award – eligible applicants must be students of the applied physical sciences who are citizens or permanent residents of the U.S., and who are willing to morally commit to make their skills available to the United States in time of national emergency.  College seniors wishing to pursue the Ph.D. degree in any of the fields of particular interest to the Foundation, as well as graduate students already in the process of doing so, may apply.
  • Award:  $28,000/9 months/renewable up to 5 years

IBM

  • Ph.D. Fellowships – intended to honor exceptional PhD students in disciplines of mutual interest, including:  chemistry, computer science, electrical engineering, materials science, mathematics, mechanical engineering and physics, as well as emerging technical fields, such as e-commerce, nanotechnology, and the computational sciences.  Must be nominated by a faculty member (students of all nationalities).
  • Award:  $17,500 for one academic year

Link Foundation

  • Energy Fellowship – applicant must be accepted and/or working toward a Ph.D. and there are no limitations placed on citizenship, but fellowships are only tenable at U.S. and Canadian Universities.
  • Award:  $25,000/year for 2 years

National Science Foundation (NSF)

  • Graduate Research Fellowships – applicants must be U.S. citizens or nationals, or permanent resident aliens.  Those eligible to apply are college seniors, first-year graduate students, and others who have completed a limited amount of graduate study in science, mathematics, or engineering.  Women who intend to pursue graduate degrees in engineering or in computer and information science and engineering and who meet the eligibility requirements above can apply for the additional Women in Engineering or Women in Computer and Information Science Awards.
  • Award:  $40,500/year/ 3 years (pending availability of funds)
