Each year, the Engineering Council recognizes the top 10 percent of advisors across all disciplines of engineering. The Engineering Council Award for Excellence in Advising is chosen by undergraduate and graduate students in engineering. This year, five from MechSE were awarded with this honor: Undergraduate Programs Coordinator Missy Biehl, Associate Professor Randy Ewoldt, former Director of Undergraduate Programs Emad Jassim, Professor Harley Johnson, and Undergraduate Academic Advisor Stephanie Ott-Monsivais.

Biehl has served as an academic advisor in the MechSE department for just over six years. She helps coordinate department and student-led events, and facilitates and encourages student involvement in undergraduate programs and student societies. Prior to joining MechSE, she was an academic advisor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. She won this award in 2016, 2017, and 2018.

Ewoldt has been named to the campus’ List of Teachers Ranked as Excellent many times and is the recipient of several department and college teaching honors the last few years: the 2015 Rose Award for Teaching Excellence, 2017 MechSE Alumni Two-Year Effective Teaching Award, 2018 Collins Award for Innovative Teaching, and 2019 MechSE Alumni Five-Year Effective Teaching Award.

He earned a BS, MS, and PhD in mechanical engineering, all from Illinois. Jassim has previously been recognized for his advising and teaching, receiving the 2017 Campus Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, 2017 College of Engineering Teaching Excellence Award, 2014 MechSE Alumni Five-Year Effective Teaching Award, and 2013 College of Engineering Excellence in Undergraduate Advising Award. He is regularly included on the List of Teachers Ranked as Excellent.
