Koric, NSCA team win two international awards

MechSE’s Seid Koric, as part of a team of affiliates of the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NSCA) at Illinois, was recently recognized with two awards at the 2018 International Conference for High Performance Computing, Networking, Storage and Analysis (SC2018) in Dallas.

The team won Best Use of Artificial Intelligence and Best Use of HPC in Automotive in the annual HPCWire Editors’ Choice Awards.

“NCSA is honored to be recognized for our contributions in AI and HPC use in industry,” said William Gropp, director of NCSA. “Congratulations to our research partners and thank you to HPCwire for this recognition.”

For the award for use of AI, Koric and the team “pioneered the use of GPU-accelerated deep learning for rapid detection and characterization of gravitational waves. This new approach will enable astronomers to study gravitational waves using minimal computational resources, reducing time to discovery and increasing the scientific reach of gravitational wave astrophysics.” Read more about this research here.

The award for their use of high-performance computing in automotive was for an engineering problem at Rolls Royce that required a large-scale software solution. Read more about the research here.

Koric is a Research Associate Professor in MechSE and a Technical Assistant Director at NCSA. His work is focused on large-scale multiphysics modeling, high-performance computing, materials processing, biomechanics, nano-manufacturing and sparse direct solver technologies.
